SUMMARY:Called to Act
DESCRIPTION:In a moment when democratic norms are under pressure and communities are hurting\, what is the church’s role? Led by Dylan Sellers\, pastor of Purpose216 Church in Cleveland\, OH\, the half-day gathering brings people of faith together for honest conversation\, shared discernment\, and practical next steps\, grounded in spirituality rather than partisanship. If you’ve felt the tension between your faith and the world around you\, bring it here. Lunch provided. Come join us on July 18th\, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Fellowship Hall of the Federated Church\, 76 Bell St\, Chagrin Falls\, OH 44022. \nWhat We’ll Explore Together: \nHow do we begin to see our justice work as faith work? \nWhat does it mean for the church to be a community\, not just a building? \nHow did Jesus form disciples into leaders — and what does that ask of us? \nIf Acts describes the early church as organized for collective care\, what is ours organized for? \nWhat does it look like to live righteousness\, not just worship it? \n  \n  \nRegister here

SUMMARY:"We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance" w/ Kellie Carter Jackson
DESCRIPTION:In her lecture\, “We Refuse\,” historian Kellie Carter Jackson looks beyond this false choice\, offering an unflinching examination of the breadth of Black responses to white oppression\, particularly those pioneered by Black women\, with emphasis on gun ownership. Carter Jackson examines other\, no less vital tactics that have shaped the Black struggle\, from the restorative power of finding joy in the face of suffering to the quiet strength of simply walking away. This lecture will provide a deeper historical insight and understanding of how power\, violence\, and state authority shape legal and social outcomes.

SUMMARY:City Club of Cleveland's Conversation with Five Bullets Author Elliot Williams
DESCRIPTION:In Five Bullets\, Elliot Williams vaults back to gritty 1980s Manhattan and reexamines the first major true-crime story of the cable news era. Drawing on archives and interviews with many main characters\, including Goetz\, Williams presents a masterful and vivid tale that also tells the origin stories of larger-than-life figures like Al Sharpton\, Rudy Giuliani\, and Rupert Murdoch. Five Bullets demonstrates why\, in order to understand today’s debates about race\, crime\, safety\, and the media\, it’s imperative to reflect on what went down in the subway four decades ago.
