SUMMARY:Exploring the Disparity in Green Space Access
DESCRIPTION:Green Book Cleveland is a restorative history project of the Center for Public History + Digital Humanities at Cleveland State University and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. \nVictor H. Green’s Green Book guides\, published between 1936 and 1966 to help Black motorists find courteous service and avoid harassment or the embarrassment of rejection in their travels\, have drawn new interest in recent years in journalism\, scholarship\, and popular culture. \nGreen Book Cleveland maps and further documents Northeast Ohio Green Book sites\, as well as places that never appeared in any of its 23 national editions. The Green Book never captured the full range of entertainment\, leisure\, and recreation sites that African Americans enjoyed. Green Book Cleveland seeks to document Black economic life\, from restaurants\, taverns\, and nightclubs to beauty and barber shop and even the garages and service stations that facilitated travel within and beyond Black neighborhoods like Cedar-Central and “surrogate suburbs” like Glenville and Lee-Harvard. These are mostly stories of small business owners and the clienteles they served\, but they extend to stories of struggles simply to enjoy fresh air and cool water. \nRegister by clicking here. \nThanks to our sponsors: Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District\, The Living Waters Association\, The Sauerland Foundation\, The Cuyahoga Valley National Park\, The Cleveland State University Cleveland Memory Project\, The Union Miles Development Corp. and The Community Life Collaborative.

SUMMARY:A Song Can Save a Life
DESCRIPTION:A presentation by our CLC Deep Roots Initiative Collaborative Partner\, Dennis Castiglione on the efforts of his organization\, Power of Harmony. \nPower of Harmony was created and launched in Northeast Ohio by Dennis Castiglione\, Outreach Program & Development Manager for Harmony Foundation International in 2019. It introduces the healing and therapeutic power of music to youth in juvenile correctional facilities through formal education\, live professional performances\, youth participation and adult mentorship. The mission of the program is to reduce recidivism and help change the life trajectory of incarcerated youth. Power of Harmony uses vocal ensemble singing and positive male role models to demonstrate the values of cooperation and community. The expectation is that singing in community “inside” and continued engagement and guidance\, post-release\, will encourage a successful transition into life on the “outside”. \nPower of Harmony is active in all three Ohio juvenile correctional facilities today (Cuyahoga Hills in Cleveland\, Ohio; Indian River in Massillon\, Ohio; and Circleville in Circleville\, Ohio) and was introduced in Dallas\, Texas in November 2022. Expansion is expected into six additional states in the near future. \nThis event is part of our Deep Roots Initiative. \nRegistration information to come.

SUMMARY:Wings & Voices Over the Cuyahoga Gallery Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled and honored to have the Jim Roetzel Wings and Voices exhibit installed as the kickoff to a new chapter of engagement to communities through art. \nThis exhibit is a wonderful complement to the Our Nature Series. During the last year\, we explored our (dis)connection with our local ecosystems and the socioeconomic\, spiritual\, and habitat issues we need to address in order to become agents of change in both big and small ways. \nRethinking\, restoring and rebuilding our relationship to nature is an ongoing conversation and we’ll continue to support building better backyards and stronger communities. \nThe Family Life Center Gardenview Gallery at 16349 Chillicothe Road\, Bainbridge \nViewing Hours \nTuesdays from 12 – 5 pm \nWednesdays from 12 – 5 pm \nThursdays from 3 – 7 pm
