A Song Can Save a Life

A presentation by our CLC Deep Roots Initiative Collaborative Partner, Dennis Castiglione on the efforts of his organization, Power of Harmony.

Power of Harmony was created and launched in Northeast Ohio by Dennis Castiglione, Outreach Program & Development Manager for Harmony Foundation International in 2019. It introduces the healing and therapeutic power of music to youth in juvenile correctional facilities through formal education, live professional performances, youth participation and adult mentorship. The mission of the program is to reduce recidivism and help change the life trajectory of incarcerated youth. Power of Harmony uses vocal ensemble singing and positive male role models to demonstrate the values of cooperation and community. The expectation is that singing in community “inside” and continued engagement and guidance, post-release, will encourage a successful transition into life on the “outside”.

Power of Harmony is active in all three Ohio juvenile correctional facilities today (Cuyahoga Hills in Cleveland, Ohio; Indian River in Massillon, Ohio; and Circleville in Circleville, Ohio) and was introduced in Dallas, Texas in November 2022. Expansion is expected into six additional states in the near future.
